Choosing Your Solicitor

Choosing the right solicitor is more important than you might think. A good solicitor will assist your transaction, make sure it proceeds smoothly and reaches a satisfactory conclusion. A bad solicitor will hinder the process, not return your calls and possibly fail to settle the deal …. and still get paid..

Some helpful hints on making the right choice

bulletAsk friends, family or your estate agent whom they recommend. A recommendation is almost always best.
bulletRing two or three of these recommended solicitors and speak with them. Decide who is most helpful and who you feel most comfortable with. A good relationship with your solicitor is very important in the swift transaction of your property
bulletDo not choose on price. Remember the cheapest is not always the best. Solicitors' fees can vary. But again you pay for what you get. That is not to say that a local conveyancer cannot offer a good service. Again, be guided by recommendation.
bulletMakes sure that the solicitor has at least one partner. Some building societies will not deal with sole practitioners. If this is the case you may incur extra costs for a second solicitor to assist the first.
bulletAsk that quotes be sent to you. If a quote is received promptly it will give you an idea how efficient the operation is.
bullet· When your solicitor requests information , return it as fully and quickly as possible. Pay for your local search. Your solicitor depends on the fullest information, and the returned search from the local authority. Your early response in meeting his requirements can prevent hold-ups.
bullet· Do not be afraid to speak to your solicitor. He is there to help you. No matter how basic are your questions, he is only too willing to pass on his knowledge. After all, that is what you pay him for.
